Medical Coding Certification

Is medical coding certification necessary?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

But it is a great way to distinguish yourself in the field of coding. And it’s also a great way to demonstrate your value to potential employers; especially the ones who can offer you the best medical coding jobs.

Certification–which is also called credentialing–as a medical coder is one way to demonstrate your knowledge and skill in the profession of medical coding.

Certain organizations offer training and examinations that will allow you to earn your credential in this field, as well as in many specialized areas within the profession.

When pursuing your coding certification, you have several organizations to choose from. Before you choose, talk to members of each organization and ask plenty of questions.

Looking at the basics, you’ll want to find out the cost of their training program, and also the length of time it takes to complete the program.

You’ll also want to ask about the percentage of medical coding specialists who successfully pass the credentialing examination.

And here’s a big shortcut to getting great information about a medical coding certification program: ask to speak with medical coders who have taken their organization’s training program and examination.

Most organizations should be willing to provide you with contact information of one or more coders who can speak from experience about the program. If not, ask that your contact information be passed along to someone who will contact you.

Several organizations offer credentialing in the coding field. You’ll need to do some exploring, before making your choice. Here are a few places you may want to start with:

– The Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC)

– The American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)

– The Professional Association of Healthcare Coding Specialists (PAHCS)

Take your time when selecting the program that’s right for you. Get as much information as you can, before you commit to investing your time and money. This includes speaking to people who have actually completed their training and earned their medical coding certification through whichever program you’re considering enrolling in.
